What is AI ?
AI has become a buzzword in the education technology world, and for good reason. With the emergence of generative AI, such as ChatGPT, text to image generators, and Presentation generators, we are now able to witness greater potential for AI in the classroom. It's important to note that we've been using AI for years, whether we realize it or not through tools like word prediction and programs that use automatic grading. The difference is that AI is becoming more accessible and easier to use than ever before.
As exciting as it is to have this new tool at our disposal, we must also be aware of its limitations. Bias and inaccurate information can be generated by AI, which is why it's crucial to monitor and use it responsibly. From a teaching perspective, AI can save us time and help us create customized materials for our students.

Ethical Considerations of AI in Education
Bias and Inaccurate Information
All generative AI programs are currently in training and all give you a warning that their product is still in development. The training and refinement that most AI tools undergo is based on free labor. The people who sign up for beta testing are the ones providing feedback on what changes need to take place. With free labor, no one is supervising whether all voices are being heard, thus bias becomes an issue.
Inaccurate information continues to be an issue as well, you must verify everything produced through generative AI as it is known for it "hallucinations" where it simply makes up information when giving you a response. It's important to consult a human expert when verifying if generative AI content is accurate.
Privacy
Generative AI tools are not private and you should never trust it with your private information and it especially should not be trusted with any student information.
Cheating
With the onset of generative AI programs, cheating on class assignments has become a concern. While there are tools out there to help detect the use of AI to write assignments, they are not 100% accurate, and don't claim to be. Links to some of these detectors are listed below. There are many other ways that educators can encourage students to do their own work and/or use generative AI in a responsible way. Students are going to encounter AI in their personal and/or professional life so modeling and encouraging responsible use is important.
