Letter Sound Games

  • Sound Cups

    Adapted from prekinders

    Materials:

Cups or other small containers, each labeled with a different sound.

Various small objects such as plastic lizard, small block, watch, plastic frog, bandaid, necklace, button, dice.

    Procedure:

Place the objects in a basket (or just dump them on the table). Have students sort each object into a letter by its beginning sound.

You can use all 26 letters at one time, or select 3-4 cups at a time for students to focus on.

  • Adapted from prekinders

    Materials:

    Dry erase board and marker

    Procedure:

Draw a picture on a dry erase board. Call students up to erase something in the picture that begins with a provided letter sound. For example, in a picture of a snowman, students can erase something that begins with H (hat), something that begins with B (buttons), something that begins with N (nose). Continue until everything is erased.

  • Materials:

Chalk (to write sounds on the ground) or letters taped to the floor. Dice (optional)

    Procedure:

Draw hopscotch markings on the ground (how many squares and in what shape they are arranged is up to you). In each square draw a letter of the alphabet (you may want to draw both the upper and lower case letters in each). There are many ways you can play this game – call out a letter or combination of letters and ask students to jump on those letters, and as they do, for them to give the letter sound. You can also roll dice and ask your students to jump to the square that matches the number rolled, counting the squares as they jump and giving the letter sound at the end.

  • Materials:

Use two sets of letters- a-z.

    Procedure:

    • Deal 7 cards each

    • Ask students if they have the letter---

    • For sounds ask students if they have the letter that represents the sound---

    • Play until all cards have been uses

    • Count the pairs the one with the most wins.

  • Materials:

    2 sets of letters a-z

    Procedures:

    • Deal cards- two sets of letters a-z

    • Lay down cards, when there is a match its time for war

      • Lay down 3 cards turn the 4 face up- determine the rule: vowels win, letter learned win, letters with many sounds win, etc

    • Continue playing until cards are used

  • Materials:

    2 sets of letters a-z

    Procedures:

    • Deal all the cards- 2 sets of letters a-z

    • Determine the jack- Letter of the day, most difficult sound for the student. Etc.

    • each player lifts one card at a time from their pile and places it face up in the center of the table.

    • When the card played to the center is the rule card, the fun begins! The first player to slap their hand down on that card takes it, as well as all the cards beneath it. The player winning these cards turns them face down, places them under their pile of cards, and shuffles them to form a new, larger pile.

    • When more than one player slaps at a jack, the one whose hand is directly on top of the jack wins the pile. If a player slaps at any card in the center that is not a jack, they must give one card, face down, to the player of that card. When a player has no more cards left, they remain in the game until the next jack is turned. The player may slap at the jack in an effort to get a new pile. If the player fails to win that next pile, they are out of the game.
