Health Services

The ISD 917 Health Services department supports a healthy learning environment for all students and staff. The department is made up of licensed school nurses and health associates who provide a variety of services including health screenings, daily medications and procedures, and care for students who become ill during the school day.

  • ISD 917 has a number of policies in place to support the health and wellness of our students. These and other policies can be read in full on the 500 tab of the Policies page of our website;

    To help reduce the spread of disease throughout the school, we ask families to keep students home from school for the following conditions:

    • Fever of 100.0 or greater, remain at home until 24 hours after the fever returns to normal without fever-reducing medication.
    • Vomiting and/or diarrhea, remain at home until 24 hours after the last episode.
    • Cold symptoms such as a new cough, congestion, nasal drainage, sore throat, decreased appetite, interrupted sleep, and fatigue. We recommend checking with your physician before sending your student back to school.
    • Undiagnosed rash until consulting with your physician.
    • Red eyes with drainage until consulting with your physician. 

    In Addition:

    • Remain at home for 24 hours after the first dose of antibiotics are started.
    • Students should be able to fully participate in school activities when they return.
    • Please report any communicable illness such as chicken pox, pink eye, strep throat, Covid-19, influenza or ringworm to your child’s licensed school nurse.
       

  • ISD 917 and all Minnesota school districts must comply with Minnesota Statute 121A.15 Health Standards; Immunizations; School Children which says all students must be immunized or show proof of legal exemption to attend school. Failure to provide evidence of immunization or legal exemption will prohibit a student from attending school. Proper documentation must be on file with the licensed school nurse before a student will be allowed to start school.

    Authorization and Request for Administration of Medications Form

    Families are encouraged to establish medication and procedure schedules allowing students to take medications at home. The school district understands that this is not always possible. To ensure safe administration of medication or specialized procedures, the district policy and procedures are:

    • Students in member district buildings will follow all policies and procedures for the member district.
    • Students in 917 buildings will follow ISD 917 policies and procedures.
    • All medications must have written authorization from a parent.
    • All prescription medication and specialized healthcare procedures must have licensed provider authorization before the medication or procedure can be administered at school.
    • Parents must provide all medications and supplies for administration. The school district will not supply any medications.
    • Prescription medication must be in a clearly labeled container from the pharmacy.
    • Over the counter medications must be in the original container.
    • The LSN has the authority to require a licensed provider authorization for any over the counter medications.

    Self-Carry Medications

    • Written authorization from the licensed healthcare provider and parent is required annually for a student to carry and self administer medications such as an asthma inhaler, epi-pen, emergency seizure medication or pain relievers.
    • The licensed school nurse will assess the student’s knowledge and skills to safely possess and use their medication in the school setting.

  • Form for Notification and Consent to Seek Reimbursement for Health-Related Services and for Release of Records

    WRITTEN ANNUAL NOTICE OF REIMBURSEMENT FOR HEALTH-RELATED SERVICES

    Minnesota school districts may seek reimbursement from insurers and similar third parties for school based health related services. Health related services may include assessments and services for nursing,  speech/language/hearing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, personal care assistance, assistive technology devices, interpreter services, special transportation, and/or mental health. This reimbursement will apply to health related services received by students either with or without an IEP (Individual Education plan)/IFSP (Individual Family Service Plan).

    The district must obtain your consent only once. Consents are typically obtained at student intake meetings either by the parent/guardian completing the ISD 917 Notification and Consent to Seek Reimbursement for Health-Related Services and for Release of Records form or via the Infinite Campus On-line Registration (OLR) system. You have the right to receive a copy of education records the district shares with any third party when seeking reimbursement for health-related services. Minn. Stat. § 125A.21, Subd. 2(c)(2).

    The district will bill Medical Assistance (MA) or MinnesotaCare (MC) for health-related services for students with an IEP/IFSP. Minn. Stat. § 125A.21, Subd. 2(c)(1). The district will share data related to your child and health-related services with the Minnesota Department of Human Services to determine if your child is covered by MA or MC and whether those services may be billed to MA or MC. The district may not require you to sign up for or enroll in MA or MC or other insurance programs in order for your child to receive health related services.

    There will be NO cost to your family and this will NOT affect your MA/MC coverage, including TEFRA, waivered programs, service limits or thresholds. The district may not require you to incur an out-of-pocket expense such as the payment of a deductible or co-pay amount incurred in filing a claim for health services provided, but may pay the cost that you otherwise would be required to pay. The district may not use your child's benefits under MA or MC if that use would: decrease available lifetime coverage or any other insured benefit; result in your family paying for services that would otherwise be covered by the public benefits or insurance program and that are required for the child outside of the time your child is in school; increase your premiums or lead to the discontinuation of benefits or insurance; or risk your loss of eligibility for home and community-based waivers, based on aggregate health-related expenditures.

    You have the right to stop your consent for disclosure of your child’s education records to a third party, including the Department of Human Services, at any time. If you stop consent, the district may no longer share your child’s education records to seek reimbursement for health-related services. You may revoke your consent, in writing by emailing Lynda Hurt, at any time without affecting your child’s services. Revocation is not retroactive. Minn. Stat. § 125A.21, Subd. 2(c)(3).

  • Our Mission:

    • The mission of the committee is to promote a safe and healthy environment for employees, pupils and visitors. Our goal is to ensure that work and activities that are carried out by the ISD 917 do not adversely affect the health and safety of any person.
    • In order to achieve this mission, we recognize the need for consultation and communication with all staff on health and safety issues. We also recognize the need to seek expert advice, where necessary, in order to determine risks to Health and Safety.
    • We are committed to providing adequate training and information in respect of Health and Safety risk to staff, and require support from all staff and students to enable the objectives of this mission to be fulfilled.

    Role of the Health, Wellness & Safety Committee:

    1. To promote the health, safety and welfare at work of all staff, students and others for whom the district is responsible.
    2. To provide the staff training in health and safety. This will ensure that each staff member has a responsibility to take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions at work.
    3. Will participate in the annual visual inspection of the various school sites within ISD 917.
    4. Consult on ISD 917's health and safety rating that assesses all major building systems and the effectiveness of building maintenance plans.
    5. Participate in resolving health and safety complaints, including reviewing written responses to complaints.
    6. Cooperate with the Dakota County Technical College's safety committee and coordinate with DCTC's building emergency plan.
